Giants Still Fall | Jentezen Franklin

Saturday, July 4

The same God who raised up giant killers in Scripture is still raising them up today. This message from 2 Samuel will help you step up and face challenges knowing that through Jesus, every giant can be defeated.

Key Verses

II Samuel 21:15-22; Amos 2:9; Deuteronomy 2:10-11; Deuteronomy 3:11; I Samuel 17:16; Isaiah 54:17; II Timothy 1:7; II Corinthians 10:4; Ruth 2:4; Ruth 4:11; Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1;

Key Points

  • God is bigger than your giant. It doesn’t matter how big your giant is, how loud they talk, or how big their weapons are in the natural. The weapons you have through God are mighty to pull down strongholds. Giants never kill giant-killers, not because of the size of the giant-killer, but because of the size of their God.
  • Giant-killers let the spirit of faith take over the spirit of fear. It doesn’t mean you’re not afraid, but you don’t let it overwhelm your faith. It may not make sense now, but God will bring joy out of sorrow and beauty from ashes.
  • Giant-killers come from the same hotspot. May the Church produce giant-killers as fast as the world produces giants. A new generation of giant-killers is arising.
  • Stay positive. If you’re going to raise a family of giant-killers, you have to stay positive and love one another. Instead of talking down to your family, create an atmosphere of encouragement. It’s that kind of atmosphere that produces giant-killers who become famous in the Kingdom of God.

Introduction

In his message Giants Still Fall, Jentezen Franklin used Father’s Day to issue a powerful call for men—and for all believers—to rise up spiritually and confront the forces that threaten the people and purposes God has entrusted to us. Drawing from the story of David, he reminded us that while giants are real, God still raises up giant slayers.

Most people remember David’s victory over Goliath, but the story doesn’t end there. In 2 Samuel 21, we discover that four additional giants were defeated by four other warriors. Their courage was not accidental. They came from places where faith was cultivated, where ordinary people learned to trust God for extraordinary victories.

The same can be true of us. Our homes, our families, and our church can become places that produce giant killers. The giants we face today may not stand nine feet tall or carry a sword, but they are just as dangerous—fear, addiction, apathy, compromise, broken relationships, and spiritual attacks. This week, we will identify the giants in our lives and learn what it means to face them with faith, courage, and confidence that, through God's power, giants still fall.

  • What stood out to you in this past Sunday’s message?
  • Do you believe that you can be a giant slayer? Why or why not?

The Nature and Characteristics of Giants

Great stature and heavy weaponry, giants are depicted as fearful foes. There are a few details that give us a picture of what these formidable tribes looked like.

Goliath (9 feet in height) (1 Samuel 17).  2 Samuel 21:15-22 chronicles David and his mighty warriors battling four remaining giants of Gath, descendants of the Rephaim.

Ishbi-Benob with a bronze spear tip that weighed about 7.5 lbs.

Saph was killed in a battle by the Hushathite.

Lahmi: Brother of Goliath, his spear, “like a weaver’s beam”, slain by Elhanan.

Unnamed Giant: this giant had 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot. Killed by Jonathan, David’s nephew.

Deuteronomy 3:11 describes a giant named Og, King of Bashan, whose iron bed measured about 13.5 feet by 6 feet.

The fear factor paralyzed their enemies. Huge spears, coat of mail (125 lbs), shields too big to carry alone.

Slaying these giants demonstrated the power of God working through His chosen leaders and warriors.

God’s people are reminded: Isaiah 54:17 “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me," declares the LORD.”

The race of giants shared common traits:

  • Occupying a large territory
  • Relentlessly loud and threats to defeat their enemies.
  • Heavy weaponry.
  • Use of “suffocating fear as a blanket” to cause panic in their enemy’s camp

Today we battle our own giants. Spiritual strongholds of fear, accusations against our family, health, as well as financial attacks.

Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Our promise to claim is also found in 2 Timothy 1:7 “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”

  • What spiritual giant are you struggling with today?
  • Which Scripture can you claim in faith to defeat the enemy?
  • In what way does your mental soundtrack affect your faith?

Conclusion

As we close, remember this simple truth: worship keeps us close to God and strengthens us for every season of life. There will be times when praise comes easily and times when it is a sacrifice, but choosing to worship in every circumstance draws us into God's presence and gives us strength to overcome. Go forward encouraged, knowing that one of the most powerful weapons God has given us against the enemy is a heart devoted to praising and worshiping Yahweh.

Call To Action:

  • Examine yourself to see if you are living a life of praise and worship or if you have compartmentalized your faith and calling into a Sunday morning ritual.
  • Commit yourself to choose to worship in gratitude and look for opportunities to praise God all day long.
  • Spend time in your Bible each day to hear the Lord’s voice for ways to express your gratitude in praise and worship especially in difficult times.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit to give you a fresh anointing to guide you in how you can be a positive influence on others through your practice of worshiping at all times and in all circumstances.
  • Journal what God is doing in your life and how you are responding to Him.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for calling us to fill the role of worshipers of You.  Thank You that this call is enabled and empowered by the incredible gift of Your grace and mercy in the face of our sinfulness.  Thank You for the gift of salvation and redemption that was not afforded to the angels that rebelled but was given to mankind despite our rebellion. Pour out Your Spirit on us to worship You in spirit and in truth.  Enable us to both glorify you and to influence others in a positive manner through our praises of Your holy name!

In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
