To Have, And To Hold

Romans 8:5 (NKJV)
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”
Devotion
In the film, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” George made the claim that if he had not been born, everybody else would be better off. Clarence the angel responded highlighting how one man’s life affects the lives of so many others. He added; “Do you see the mistake if you were to throw it all away?”
In similar fashion, in this week’s At The Movies feature “The Family Man”, Jack was making the argument to Kate, that in his desire to return to the corporate world, their lives would be so much better. A bigger house, nicer things, better restaurants; where they wouldn’t have to cut corners to make ends meet.
Kate listened with her heart. She knew it would come at a cost: the desire of the flesh to pursue and chase after things. Kate knew this decision would consume Jack’s time and energy. His mind would be filled with business, mergers and his desire to make money, hands over fist. At what expense, to what end? Quite possibly, he would be sacrificing time with his children, his wife, and their quintessential dream of growing up and growing old together.
And if one were to spend less time with his family, how much less time would he spend with God?
When we come to salvation in our Lord Jesus, God the Father has already written out the script for each of our lives — where we will be born, where we will live, whom we will marry (if we are to marry), and how many children we will have, if any. God has bequeathed us with talents — at least one.
And if Jesus was to tarry, many will carry on the family name for posterity. But All of us in Christ Jesus will carry his Name forever.
If we pursue and chase after the flesh, we will have a mediocre life; but if we pursue and chase after The Holy Spirit, we will have a Wonderful Life.
Toward the end of the movie The Family Man, as Kate was waiting to board the plane—just like Jack was in the beginning—a conversation ensued that changed their plans and direction, a decision that could alter the course of their lives.
This time Kate listened, she pondered. She was waiting and listening. It can be said that she chose wisely like Mary in Luke 10; “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)
Today's Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You that in Jesus we can live by the Spirit and be transformed by the renewing of our minds. I confess that I am often tempted to set my mind on things of the flesh and even to pretend that the things of the flesh in my mind are things from Your Holy Spirit. Oh God! When I deceive even myself, rescue me – rescue me through the truths of Scripture, through the preaching and admonishment and encouragement of people in my life, and by clearer revelation by Your Spirit. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
