The Weight Of Honor
Monday, June 16
Deuteronomy 5:16 (NKJV)
“‘Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.”
Devotion
Honor is not old-fashioned. It’s eternal. God didn’t suggest it, He commanded it. Not because He wanted control, but because He knows that honor is the soil where blessing grows.
To honor means to give weight to something, to treat it as valuable, sacred, worth holding with care. And God begins that lesson with our parents, not because they are perfect, but because they were chosen.
Honor doesn’t excuse wrong, but it keeps your heart right. You don’t honor because someone deserves it. You honor because you’ve been called to live differently. To carry a different spirit. To value what God values.
And the reward? That it may go well with you. That your days may be long. Honor protects. It preserves. It plants seeds that your future self will one day harvest.
In a culture that celebrates rebellion and glorifies defiance, God calls you to choose honor, because it’s not just about your parents…It’s about your posture. The way you honor people reveals the way you honor God.
So ask yourself: Where have I stopped giving weight to what God calls sacred? And how might He be calling me back, not just to obedience, but to honor that carries blessing?
Today's Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Teach me how to walk in honor. Not just with words, but with the posture of my heart.
Help me to value what You value, even when it’s hard or uncomfortable. Where pride wants to rise, let humility lead. Where offense wants to stay, let grace take root. May I be someone who honors not out of obligation, but out of obedience to You. And may my life reflect the blessing that flows from a heart that honors well. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
Choose one area this week where honor has been lacking, whether in how you speak to a parent, respond to a leader, or treat someone God has placed in your life. Actively restore honor in that area. Write a note, make a call, show up with a right spirit, not because they earned it, but because God asked it.
