Matthew 18:19-20 (NKJV)

“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Devotion

As a husband and wife journey through life together, they encounter numerous challenges, joys, and uncertainties. During this beautiful yet sometimes turbulent journey, one of the most powerful anchors we have is prayer. Matthew 18:19-20 highlights the profound significance of couples coming together in prayer, tapping into the divine promise of God's presence and intervention.

Jesus assures us that when two hearts are aligned in prayer, there is extraordinary power unleashed. It's not merely the act of praying together that holds significance but the unity of purpose and agreement in faith that ignites divine responses. In a world filled with distractions and pressures, the act of coming together in prayer solidifies the bond between husband and wife, drawing them closer to each other and God.

When couples pray together, they affirm their dependence on God and acknowledge His sovereignty over their lives. They bring their joys, struggles, dreams, and fears before the throne of grace, trusting that God hears their petitions and responds according to His perfect will. This shared spiritual intimacy fosters a deeper connection between husband and wife, strengthening their relationship on both earthly and heavenly levels.

Moreover, as husband and wife align their prayers with God's will, they experience the beauty of witnessing His faithfulness unfold. Whether it's seeking guidance for important decisions, interceding for each other's needs, or lifting their marriage and family, God delights in answering the prayers of His children who seek Him in unity.
But beyond the answers to specific requests, there is a profound blessing in the act of gathering together in Jesus' name. Amid our prayers, He promises His presence. He is a silent listener to our conversations, a comforting presence in our struggles, and a source of strength in our weaknesses. As husband and wife pray together, they invite the very presence of Christ into their midst, transforming their relationship and infusing it with His love, grace, and peace.

Today’s Prayer

Married (to be prayed together):
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the message last Sunday encouraging us to pray together every day. Show us the prayers that You are eager to answer. Build our faith for the things You want us to have and take away our desires for things that would be harmful. Help us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds so we can pray more for Your will to be done, in our lives and release our wills to Your oversight and direction. In the Name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Single:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Sometimes all this talk on marriage makes me confused and lonely. If I am to remain single, then give me the gifts of contentment and celibacy, so that I will not sin against You. If You withhold the gift of celibacy from me, then may I lay hold of Paul's hint that followers of Jesus have the right to take along a believing wife. Is it not better to marry than to burn with passion? Yes, Lord, yes it is. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Apply It Today

If the devil can divide husband and wife and keep them from seeking first the kingdom of God together, the marriage is vulnerable. Pastor Craig Groeschel encouraged married couples to develop this one life-changing, marriage-growing habit: Pray with your spouse. Keep it short. Keep it consistent. If you miss a day, don’t miss two.
