Matthew 6:6 (NIV)
““But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Devotion
In the hustle and bustle of our lives, it's easy to get caught up in the noise around us. We are bombarded with distractions, obligations, and responsibilities, leaving little time for quiet reflection and prayer. Yet, in the midst of this chaos, Jesus offers us a profound invitation – an invitation to prayer.
Matthew 6:6 provides us with a powerful insight into the nature of prayer. Jesus encourages us to retreat to a quiet place, to shut out the clamor of the world, and to engage in intimate conversation with God. It's in these moments of solitude that the true power of prayer is revealed.
When we pray in secret, away from the eyes of the world, we open ourselves up to a deeper communion with God. In the stillness of our hearts, we can pour out our hopes, our fears, our joys, and our sorrows before the One who knows us intimately. We can speak honestly and openly, knowing that we are heard by a loving Father who cares for us deeply.
But prayer is more than just words spoken into open space. It is an act of faith, a declaration of our dependence on God. When we pray, we acknowledge our need for His wisdom, His guidance, and His strength. We surrender control and trust in His sovereign will, knowing that He works all things together for our good.
Yet, the power of prayer extends beyond our individual lives. When we pray, we participate in God's redemptive work in the world. Our prayers have the ability to bring about transformation, healing, and renewal. They have the power to move mountains and to usher in God's kingdom here on earth. Our prayers are never in vain!
So let us heed Jesus' call to prayer. Let us carve out time in our busy schedules to seek God in the secret place. Let us pour out our hearts before Him, knowing that He hears us and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. And let us never underestimate the hidden strength of prayer to change our lives and our world. Pray without ceasing. (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank You for the gift of Jesus and the Lord's prayer. I confess that I don't pray for my children enough, especially about not being led into temptation and being delivered from the evil one. Lord God, show me more specifically where each of my children is being tempted and how I can better pray for them to be delivered from the evil one. Forgive me for approaching You with many words, speaking too much of what I want, and listening too little for how You would like Your will to be done in me and in my household. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
Here is an additional way to expand your prayer life. If you drive a car alone, make it a prayer closet, even for a few minutes. Pray the Lord’s Prayer, pray for safe passage wherever you are going, pray to be spiritually prepared when you reach your destination, recite verses you are memorizing, worship out loud, cry out to Jesus in thanksgiving and intercession. There is no place for embarrassment when it’s just you and the Lord.
