The Foolish Shame The Wise Through Selfless Service
Tuesday, July 16
1 Corinthians 1:28-30 (NIV)
“God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”
Devotion
Are you waiting to feel some level of importance before you set your hand to doing something for Jesus? A lowly gentile named Cornelius came to God's attention before he was even saved as his prayers and gifts to the poor rose up to heaven “as a memorial offering before God.” (Acts 10:4) Be reminded that “religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” (James 1:27)
The quality of our service should improve as we grow in our faith in Jesus. But as we “work out our salvation with fear and trembling,” (Philippians 2:12) we should not wait until we are confident in some level of maturity or sanctification before we call upon the name of Jesus to ask how we might be of service in his kingdom.
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, then do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” (Romans 12:6-8) If you are unsure of your gift, trust that Jesus can and will steer the moving ship as you get it in gear and try something. You will find that the body of Jesus will help you recognize your gifts and find your right place of service once you fully engage.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
The verses from Your Word, which are listed above, inspire me to use my giftings and talents on behalf of others. Our world is a dark place, and Your light needs to shine through me more than it has in the past. Help me to view no assignment from You as too big or too small. Help me to step into alignment with Your word and do what You have called all Your children to do; be a light in this dark world through action, word, and deed. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
Make it a point today to begin pursuing the Lord through Bible study and prayer, so that when a situation presents itself, you will be ready and willing to step in and offer what you can to others, in His service.
