Seeking God First For True Prosperity

Sunday, September 29

2 Chronicles 26:5 (NIV)
“He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success.”
Devotion

In this passage, we see the story of King Uzziah, a young ruler who prospered as long as he sought the Lord. His reign began with great potential, and under the guidance of a godly mentor, Uzziah made seeking God his number one pursuit. The result? God ensured his success in all things, militarily, economically, and socially. But this wasn’t merely about achieving earthly goals; Uzziah’s prosperity was a reflection of his heart's posture toward God.

The principle we see here is simple: when we put God first and seek Him earnestly, He establishes and prospers us. It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of life, work, relationships, finances, but we must remember that real success flows from prioritizing God. Jesus reminds us of the same truth in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

A successful life is one that aligns with God’s will and seeks Him above all. When we make God our number one pursuit, He orders our steps, gives us wisdom, and provides for all our needs. Our prosperity doesn’t come from striving in our own strength but from humbling ourselves before the Lord and allowing Him to guide us.

Today’s Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,
I thank You for the example of King Uzziah. I thank You for the promise that if I seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness that all these things will be added to me as well. I confess I have often gotten distracted by the cares of this life, by the thorns and thistles. Oh Lord, please prune my life of whatever is hindering my wholehearted seeking of Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. Build my faith that my daily bread comes from asking my loving Father and not from anxiously worrying about it. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Apply It Today

Pause and say the Lord’s prayer (Matthew 6:9-13). Write it out on a piece of paper and affix it somewhere you will see it for this week. When you see it, go ahead and say it out loud. This will help you acknowledge God first and invite Him into your life as you live it beyond the place of private prayer.

Resources:

  • Are you putting God first, last, or somewhere in the middle of your priorities? As you watch, “Seek”, honestly rate where God falls on your list of importance, and determine to do what you need to, in order to make Him number one.
  • Read and meditate on Psalm 27:8, and be reminded that God, Himself wants an intimate relationship with you daily.
