Seek First The Kingdom
Sunday, December 15
Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Devotion
In the busyness of life, it's easy to become consumed with meeting our needs. Bills must be paid, food must be provided, and dreams must be pursued. These responsibilities, while necessary, can often distract us from what truly matters. Yet, in Matthew 6:33, Jesus gently redirects our focus. He reminds us that our primary pursuit should not be material gain or personal ambition, but rather the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.
God, in His infinite wisdom, knows everything we need—both seen and unseen. He assures us that when we prioritize Him, living in obedience to His will and aligning our lives with His righteousness, He will take care of the rest. This is not a call to neglect our responsibilities but an invitation to trust Him with them.
Jesus also warns against the danger of making material things our obsession. When possessions, success, or financial security become the center of our lives, they take the place that belongs to God alone. These things can never satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. True peace and fulfillment come when we seek God's presence and walk in His ways.
Consider the lilies of the field, as Jesus mentioned earlier in this chapter. They neither toil nor spin, yet their beauty surpasses the splendor of kings. How much more does God care for you, His beloved child? When you prioritize His Kingdom, you invite His blessings into every area of your life—your relationships, your career, and even your needs.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this precious promise that, if I seek first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness, all these things will be added to me as well. I confess my past history of thinking I was in a good place seeking Your Kingdom and Your righteousness, but You later showed me I was trusting in my own understanding. Perhaps we can skip the more painful lessons this time. My heart is deceitful above all else and beyond cure. But by the blood of Jesus, I claim that You can show me practical ways where I am still seeking my own kingdom and things to support it, rather than Your Kingdom. Bring me to repentance through Your gentle hand of correction in the near term rather than some of the harder roads that my stiff neck and hardened heart required in the past. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
There is a simple song that goes, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness. And all these things will be added unto you. Hallelu, hallelujah.” That’s the whole song. If you don’t already know this song, find a recording and learn it. Then you can sing it to yourself when you get anxious about material things, and ask God to shape the desires of your heart to line up with His.
