Humble Yourself Before Him
Sunday, May 26
Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)
“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Devotion
Too often, Christians let their differences separate them. In John 17:11, Jesus prayed to his Father, saying, "Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are." He desires unity in the church. When we insist on having our own way, we create contentions, doing the opposite of what Jesus wanted. Pride is the root cause of these problems when we think we know better than others.
The Apostle Paul stated in Philippians 2:3, "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself." (NKJV) This means we should not become haughty or feel superior to others. We must avoid the mindset of "my way or the highway." As Christians, we are called to be set apart from the world's philosophy and beliefs. How can others see that we are different if we are fighting among ourselves? We are meant to be salt and light in the world, showing a distinct difference that prompts others to ask why we believe and live as we do.
Jesus taught that a real friend lays down his life for others. This doesn't only mean dying but also denying ourselves, serving the Lord, and serving fellow Christians. Jesus called all of us his friends, and we are brothers and sisters in Christ. If we claim to be God's friends, we should demonstrate love and respect for others. Humble yourself before God, repent of your prideful attitude, and seek forgiveness from God and those you have offended. Don't hold grudges. Remember, it is better to agree to disagree than to cause arguments. The Holy Spirit cannot move in a church divided by contentions.
Do not be like Pharaoh, hard-hearted and resistant, or like the Corinthians who looked down on the Apostle Paul, thinking he was weak. God cannot use us when we are full of ourselves. We need to empty ourselves and serve others. This is the only way to rid ourselves of pride and truly show love both in and outside the church. We must pick up our cross, follow Him, and shed our old natures.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I come to You in repentance for the times I have let pride and arrogance creep in and cause division between others and myself. You said in Your Word that we are to love one another so that the world will know we are Your disciples. Indeed, I want the world to see Your Spirit and love within me that I may be a witness to them. Please help me to be always mindful, and to rid myself of wrong thoughts and unforgiveness immediately so that my light may shine for You. I give You honor and glory, in the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
