How To Be Close To God
Saturday, July 26
Psalm 145:18 (NIV)
“The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.”
Devotion
Times of sadness and loneliness come upon each of us. We may feel far from “home” for various reasons, including our own rebellion against God. But God Himself has declared, “Am I only a God nearby … and not a God far away? Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?” (Jeremiah 23:23-24)
In Psalm 145, David leaves no doubt who is the God and King he is praising. The Name of YHWH, as revealed to Moses, is used 10 times (indicated as LORD in all capital letters in English translations). God is not an impersonal, spiritual force. God is not a higher power far away. God is not a watchmaker who set the world in motion and took a step back.
He is the Creator and the perfect Heavenly Father. He is righteous and kind (verse 17). He is holy, holy, holy (Isaiah 6:3) but we can, and we must, trust Him with the truth about ourselves.
Satan would drive us to despair in times of sadness and loneliness. Do not give in! Turn that temptation on its head. These are opportunities to call upon God in truth. He promises to be near.
Today's Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
How I need You. Oh! I need You. Every hour I need You. Let my prayer and song rise to You when sadness or loneliness comes my way. When I cannot stand, I’ll fall at Your feet. Wash me and make me clean. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation. Thank You for being near. Please lead me to my heavenly home. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
