1 Corinthians 1:26-27 (ESV)
“For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;”
Devotion
As Christians we do not depend on our own strength or wisdom over God’s. Oftentimes in our lives God calls us to do things that are beyond our ability or means. Esther was not born into royalty, and even having been made queen through a beauty contest, she had to rely on God for wisdom, favor, and protection in gaining the King of Persia’s audience at a time when she did not have the right to do so. The widow from Zarephath, who was about to prepare her last meal for herself and her son, was asked to do beyond her means to feed the prophet Elijah. Similarly, common fishermen, and a tax collector were among those whom Jesus called to be his disciples.
When we come alongside others in need, we don’t always know how, or have the means to make a difference. We are just given the task at hand, to be the hands and feet of Jesus. He does the rest. He opens the doors, motivates hearts to come alongside, provides the tools, the wisdom and the means. He makes things happen that we can’t even imagine!
It is He who can touch hearts and make a difference. We have to remember that as Christians, we bring the presence of Christ into the situations that people are facing when we step out in faith to help. If we bless financially we do so with what God provided. If all we do is “be there”, we are able to bring the love of God into that situation, and show them that God cares for them. Because of the love of God within us, our presence can instill worth to a heart that feels abandoned. It is not by anything that we can do on our own but by the power and might of the Holy Spirit that lives are changed for His glory when we step out in faith.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
I admit that many times, when I see others in need, I often say a little prayer, then go on about my day, not even considering how You might desire to use me to be the answer to their prayer. Help me to be one who notices needs and steps out to help. Lord, give me wisdom to help those within my sphere of influence by being, not only a light in a dark world, but also by lending a helping hand, whatever that looks like. Thank You for helping me help others. In the Name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
Apply It Today
