Malachi 4:5-6 ESV
“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
Devotion
This prophecy was given 400 years before Jesus, the Messiah, was born. Jesus said this prophecy was fulfilled in John the Baptist (Matthew 11:13-14). John was the son of a Jewish priest named Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth in their old age. John's mission was to prepare people to meet Jesus, especially in the area of repentance. John was filled with the Holy Spirit, who provided him with the right words at the right time as he spoke.

Has the Holy Spirit used someone's voice to call you to repentance, change, or to move in a specific direction? That call is both an opportunity and a notice for a personal response from you. Let that call turn your heart toward the Heavenly Father today. Do not overlook the power of the Holy Spirit to enable you to obey with your will and actions (Psalm 95:7-11).

Today’s Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You that the Messiah is coming back, and once we are following Jesus, we have the privilege of serving as heralds of Jesus' return. We thank You that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation. We confess that we often hide our light under a bushel out of fear and doubt. Forgive us and help us to live abundantly and to declare Your praises in a way that calls others out of darkness and into Your wonderful light. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Apply It Today
Recall and write down a message that you thought was from God for you. Look up similar ideas or words in the Bible to test whether the message is consistent with God’s Word. If it aligns, turn your heart to the Heavenly Father and pray for the Holy Spirit’s help to obey.
